Before your UPS fails, there will be telltale signs of declining performance. A beep here, an unusual reading there, and changes in runtime that indicate something isn’t working properly. These warnings are easy to overlook, especially when a unit is still supplying power.

When a full-blown outage occurs, however, a failing UPS may not have the backup power your system can depend on. Before you get to the point of needing power when the unit fails to work, learning the signs and responding to them early can help prevent unexpected system failures.

1. The Alarms Won’t Quit

Every UPS triggers an alert now and then, but frequent or recurring ones can indicate an underlying problem that needs attention.

Common alerts include:

  • Battery fault or “replace battery” warnings
  • Overload alerts
  • High temperature alarms
  • Frequent transfers to bypass

When alarms go off constantly, it can often lead to tuning them out. However, each alert may indicate a specific issue, so be sure to log them and look for patterns. A cluster of alarms often points to one root cause.

2. Runtime Is Shrinking

If your UPS runtime has dropped from 15 minutes to just 6, that’s a sign your battery performance is declining.

Reduced runtime usually traces back to battery degradation. Many VRLA batteries last somewhere around 3 to 5 years under real-world conditions. As they age, capacity drops, although their lifespan varies depending on environmental factors and use.

High temperatures accelerate degradation as well, so if your UPS operates in a consistently warm environment, schedule battery testing more often.

3. It Can’t Handle the Load Anymore

Perhaps your business grew, and so did your equipment list, but your UPS hasn’t been upgraded to keep up.

When the load creeps close to the unit’s rated capacity, there’s little breathing room. Adding a new server rack can trigger overload warnings, or in more serious cases, the UPS switches to bypass and leaves your load unprotected.

Many engineers like to keep UPS load at or below about 80% of capacity. That buffer accounts for how aging components handle stress worse than they used to.

4. Something Looks, Sounds, or Smells Off

Not every warning shows up on a display, as sometimes your senses catch it first. Watch for:

  • Swollen, cracked, or leaking battery cases
  • Corrosion on terminals
  • Louder fans or new humming and buzzing
  • A unit that runs unusually hot
  • A rotten egg smell near the batteries (in this case, clear the area and call a professional)

5. Strange Behavior During Power Disturbances

Your UPS should switch over to battery power smoothly, without interrupting connected equipment. If equipment reboots during a brief outage or downstream devices shut down all of a sudden, the UPS may not be supplying the backup power you need.

These issues can stem from a variety of causes, so rather than make assumptions, have the UPS tested to spot the source of the problem and determine your next steps.

6. Thin or Incomplete Maintenance Records

When was the last preventive maintenance visit? If there’s no record of recent service, it’s time to review your maintenance schedule.

Regular service catches worn capacitors, fans, and batteries before they take the system down. Skip those scheduled inspections, and you could be letting developing issues go undetected until they completely affect system reliability.

What to Do Next

Spotted one or two of these? Don’t panic, but don’t wait either.

  1. Write down what you’re seeing and when
  2. Schedule a professional inspection and battery test
  3. Ask about a rental UPS if major repairs are needed
  4. Set up a regular maintenance plan going forward
